Congress spokesperson M. Veerappa Moily said in a statement that Gandhi expressed her “deep anguish over the loss of large number of innocent human lives in the blast, which also left hundreds injured”.

Around 140 people were killed in the midnight blasts in Karachi on Thursday targeting Bhutto’s cavalcade on her return to Pakistan after eight years of self-exile.

Gandhi expressed relief that Bhutto and her family members had a miraculous escape and wished her well. She also wished all the injured a speedy recovery.

Moily said: “The Congress president felt that forces of terror and violence pose great potential threat to democracy and civilised society. It is the duty of all countries to resolutely work against these forces of destabilisation and destruction.”

Gandhi said that the cult of hatred and violence has to be eradicated with unity of purpose by everyone.
