Yemen elected to UNESCO Nomination Committee

Sana’a : The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has elected Yemen a head of Nominations Committee to be in charge of electing the chairperson of the conference and members of the UNESCO’s Executive Council.

The election of Yemen came during the UNESCO 34th conference of being held in the French capital Paris, October 16- November 3.

Minister of Education Abdul-Salam al-Jawfi, head of Yemeni delegation to UNESCO’s conference, told Saba Yemen is nominated to some committees and programs of UNESCO, including the heritage committee and the international program of communication.

Al-Jawfi as saying that Yemen will discuss at the conference the threat to cancel the historical city of Zabid from the heritage list of the Arab world.

Al-Jawfi noted that Yemen would ask UNESCO to approve adding a number of Yemeni islands and historical cities to the list of the World Heritage for 2008, including Socotra island and cities of Hijrah and Baraqesh.

The 34th General Conference of UNESCO was opened on Tuesday with a call to consciously assume the challenges of humanity in education, poverty and development.
