Strong line-up for Commonwealth Chess

New Delhi : At least 12 Grandmasters, including nine from India, have confirmed their participation for the Commonwealth Chess Championships scheduled to be held here Dec 2-10.

National champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly, world’s youngest Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi and Asian women’s champion Tania Sachdeva lead the strong line-up for the championship.

England’s 20-year-old Grandmaster Gawain Jones, at 2587, is the highest-rated player in the list right now. Ganguly at 2585 is just behind him while Abhijit Kunte is rated 2547 and Negi 2514.

Other Indian Grandmasters who have signed up include R.B. Ramesh (2473), P.M. Thipsay (2473), Neeloptal Das (2489), Deepan Chakravarthy (2492), Tejas Bakre (2459), Dibyendu Barua (2491).

Bangladesh has two Grandmasters, Niaz Murshed and Reefat Bin Sattar, in the field.

Players from nearly 25 countries have confirmed their participation and more are expected in the next few weeks.
