Virendra Rai was killed near Shrikrishna Puri, a middle-class residential locality, late Saturday night by a mob.

According to police, the mob attacked Rai with bricks, stones and bamboo sticks after heated arguments over smoking of cigarette.

Rai’s enraged friends then caught one Kamlesh Prasad and killed him in the same fashion.

“After Rai was beaten to death by some people, his supporters beat Kamlesh to death in revenge,” Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Kundan Krishnan said Sunday.

Police are investigating the two cases of lynching.

In Bihar, impatient crowds have started delivering ‘instant justice’ by lynching suspected criminals. In last one and a half month nearly a dozen cases of lynching have been reported.

Early this month, two kidnappers were lynched by angry mob of villagers at Mahnagani in West Champaran district.

Earlier, a mob gouged out the eyes of three young men who had snatched away a motorcycle in Nawada district Sep 9.

Two people were beaten to death in Patna Sep 21 by a mob that suspected them to be robbers.

In the worst case, 10 people belonging to the poverty-stricken Kueris community were lynched by a mob of villagers in Vaishali district last month. A high-level probe found that they were not thieves as suspected.
