Baghdad : At least 13 people were killed and over 52 injured in a US air strike in Baghdad’s eastern neighbourhood of Sadr City early Sunday, an interior ministry source said.
US troops conducted an early morning air raid on residential areas in the vast Shia-dominated area, said the source seeking anonymity.
Fierce clashes broke out between the US troops and militants believed to be from Mahdi Army, a militia loyal to radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, said the source. Several houses, shops and civilian cars were damaged.
Sadr City is a stronghold of Sadr’s Mahdi Army, who declared recently a six-month freeze of armed activities for his militia.
