Bhola Ram Ahirwar allegedly attacked the statue in a drunken state after a dispute with local residents over playing of loudspeaker at his house during Dussehra Puja Sunday.

As the news of statue’s desecration spread, a mob gathered around Bhola’s house and torched the place. It clashed with the police who managed to rescue Bhola and his family.

“Since Ahirwars too are followers of Ambedkar, it’s not clear what the motive behind the act was,” said a police inspector, adding that the police had to resort to mild baton charge and tear gas shelling to disperse the crowd.

Bhola has been arrested and a police case has been registered against him.

A heavy police force has been deployed in the locality to avoid any further flare up.
