New Delhi : The Congress Monday attacked the CPI-M led government in West Bengal for food riots in the state and said this reflected the enormous deficiencies in the state’s food distribution system to the poor.

In a hard hitting statement, the Congress said: “Those who profess concern for the poorest of the poor should immediately set their own house in order. They have to urgently address the legitimate concern of the deprived and the needy.”

The reference was to the attacks on traders and public distribution system centres in West Bengal following shortages of food in some districts. The CPI-M has blamed the central government for the crisis.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi also took strong exception to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani’s demand for an enhancement of the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy.

He said: “The previous BJP led NDA government had not done anything for paddy farmers.”
