Ludhiana : Last minute cancellation of an international wrestling tournament Thursday led to unruly scenes at a press conference called by the organisers here.
The much publicised tournament, featuring wrestlers from abroad, was organised by the Universal Wrestlers and had to be called off after district authorities in Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Patiala denied them permission to hold the tournament.
The organisers had sold the tickets to the event even though they didn’t have the necessary permission from the authorities.
The infuriated wrestlers vented their anger at the press conference, in an upscale hotel, abusing India and the Indian authorities.
The event soon turned into a free for all when the media persons present objected to the wrestlers’ behaviour.
One of the wrestlers, Nikita from Russia, charged towards the media persons and physically lifted one of the TV cameramen.
He also got into a fight with Indian-born wrestler Tiger Jeet Singh from the US and his supporters.
The police had to be called to break up the fight. The media persons demanded that the wrestlers be booked for insulting the country.
The police, till Thursday evening, had not registered a case.
