New Delhi : Expressing displeasure over violation of the poll code, the Election Commission Friday issued notice to a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator in Gujarat along with the vice chancellor and pro-vice chancellor of Saurashtra University.
Gujarat goes to polls in December this year.
The commission has taken serious note of legislator Pradeep Singh Jadeja who had got pamphlets printed showing a photograph of himself and Chief Minister Narendra Modi with the BJP election symbol alongside the photograph of Hindu goddess Maa Amba. The pamphlets were distributed in garba programmes during Navratri in Asarwa constituency of Ahmedabad.
Jadeja has been asked to give an explanation by Sunday noon.
Saurashtra University vice chancellor Kamlesh Joshipura and pro-vice chancellor Kaplak Trivedi have been asked to explain their utterances on public platforms that amount to political speeches eulogizing Modi. Joshipura has been asked to explain the use of his official vehicle for attending a meeting of political nature.
The poll panel has also directed the chief secretary of Himachal Pradesh that the visit of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh along with his ministerial colleagues and a senior functionary of his Congress party to the Election Commission building on Oct 15 cannot be held as an official visit of non-political nature.
The commission has decided that the visit is of political nature.
It has stated that the state government should not defray the expenditure for the use of helicopter or meet the said expenditure from the departmental funds. It has directed that the same be recovered from the users of the state helicopter, which was in violation of the model code of conduct.
