Srinagar : Normal life was affected Saturday across Kashmir following a shutdown called by separatist politicians and guerrilla groups to protest against the Indian Army’s presence in the valley.
The Indian Army had first arrived in the Kashmir valley on Oct 27, 1947 at the invitation of the then ruler of the erstwhile princely state.
While shops in uptown and old city areas of Srinagar remained closed, traffic moved normally throughout the valley.
Small groups of protesters gathered in the old city areas of Srinagar and pelted stones on passing traffic.
Attendance in educational institutions, banks and government offices was poor.
Both groups of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq had appealed to the people to observe a black day today in order to attract international attention towards the Kashmir dispute.
