“I apologise for my behaviour. I am ashamed for what happened. I did not want to show disrespect to anyone. I have the highest regard for India and its people. There was no intention on my part to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” said Nikita, with folded hands, before local journalists at Circuit House.

Nikita said that his anger at the press conference was an emotional outburst due to the cancellation of the wrestling tournament by the district authorities.

“I take back all the words that I said then,” said Nikita, whose real name is George Kiriakoy.

Following his apology, journalists withdrew their complaint against him and the other wrestlers.

Nikita’s passport, confiscated by the police, will be returned to him and the ban on his leaving the country removed, a police official said.
