Chennai : There is no threat to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, said Left leader Prakash Karat here Monday evening after discussing the Indo-US nuclear deal with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
“There is no threat to the UPA government,” the Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary told reporters.
He said the Left wanted a common approach to the Indo-US nuclear deal during the coming parliament session.
“I feel that all likeminded parties should evolve a consensus on the matter. We discussed it in some detail,” said Karat, who has been objecting to the deal on the grounds that it violates India’s foreign policy.
Karunanidhi said that there were no discussions between them on forming a third front.
“The matter did not come up during our deliberations,” Karunanidhi said.
He said he would discuss the impasse over the nuclear deal with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi next month in New Delhi.
Reacting to the apex court notices to him on a contempt of court plea filed by the opposition, Karunanidhi said, “The petition has been moved by a condemned party [AIADMK]. Anyway, the Supreme Court has dispensed with our [including union Shipping Minister T.R. Baalu] personal appearances. We will cooperate with the courts as before.”
