Kolkata : Four police officials, including two seniors, were Tuesday interrogated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rahman, who was allegedly hounded by the police after he married Priyanka Todi, an industrialist’s daughter.
The two senior police officers questioned were former deputy commissioner (headquarters) Gyanwant Singh and deputy commissioner (detective department) Ajoy Kumar.
“We have interrogated them – IPS officers Gyanwant Singh and Ajoy Kumar – and they have said a lot of things. We have recorded their statements,” CBI joint director Arun Kumar told reporters.
“We are comparing their statements with the statements recorded by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID),” he said.
Gyanwant Singh and Ajoy Kumar were removed from their posts after their alleged role in Rizwanur’s death came under scrutiny.
The tainted duo was interrogated at the Border Security Force (BSF) office at Ballygunge in south Kolkata.
Earlier in the day, the investigating agency interrogated former assistant commissioner (anti-rowdy section) Sukanti Chakraborty and sub-inspector Krishnendu Das.
The two told the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers earlier that they were merely following instructions from their superiors while hounding Rizwanur and Priyanka to opt out of their marriage.
Rizwanur Rahman, a 30-year-old graphic designer, was found dead with his head smashed on Sep 21 by railway tracks, barely a month after his marriage with Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi.
The CBI Monday summoned four other police officers in connection with the case.
Before his death, Rizwanur had mentioned the names of Gyanwant Singh, Ajoy Kumar, Sukanta Chakraborty and Krishnendu Das as the ones who harassed him.
Todi allegedly threatened his son-in-law with dire consequences and put pressure on him through the police to annul the marriage.
