Aligarh : Aligarh Muslim University, which was closed sine die following the murder of a student on September 16, 2007, is to reopen in phases starting from November 5. Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis made an announcement to this effect in a high level meeting
chaired by Union Minister for Human Resources Arjun Singh held here Tuesday.
Medical and Engineering Colleges of the University will be reopened in the first phase on November 5.
The Union Minister announced a special grant of Rs. 48 crore for construction of two residential hostels in the university for 1,000 boys and 1,000 girls.
The Vice-Chancellor said the two new hostels will be completed soon and thus the residential problems of the students will be solved to a great extent.
The meeting endorsed the effective measures taken by the University administration to evacuate the hostel rooms that had been in the adverse possession of some bad elements and fresh allotment of rooms to the students on the basis of their respective departments.
The University administration was advised to employ the services of private security agencies to ensure standard
professional security arrangement on the campus.
The meeting was attended by Union Ministry of Human Resources Secretary R.P. Agrawal, Joint Secretary Sunil Kumar and Principal Secretary Goel besides the HRD Minister and University Vice-Chancellor.
