New Delhi : The cabinet would take up within a week or 10 days the relief and rehabilitation (R&R) policy aimed at compensating farmers whose land would be acquired for industry, a senior government official said Saturday.
“It (R&R policy) will go the cabinet in a week to 10 days and then it will be discussed in parliament. So it will be some time before it comes into effect,” the official told reporters here.
On Thursday, a group of ministers (GoM) gave final touches to the R&R policy for approval by the government in which it gave an option to the state governments to acquire 30 percent of the land meant for a special economic zone (SEZ) or any other industrial project.
The GoM, formed under Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, is aimed at forming a relief and rehabilitation policy for farmers and other people displaced due to various industrial projects.
There have been violent protests in West Bengal, Orissa and Maharashtra by farmers displaced from their lands for setting up factories and the beginning of a protest in Tamil Nadu.
