Houston, Texas:ormer Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajinder Sachar and leading Bollywood personality Kader Khan were granted the honorary citizenship of the city of Houston by Mayor Bill White at the XVII Annual Convention of the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) held in the city last week. Houston is the fourth most populous city in the United States.
Justice Sachar, who chaired the Prime Minister’s High Level Committee which prepared the report on the Socio-Economic and Educational status of Indian Muslims, was recognized for his life long commitment to justice and fairness for all citizens of India. He was also commended for his efforts in preparing the meticulously researched Sachar Commission report on the status of Indian Muslims.
Leading Film star Kader Khan was given the honor for excellence in the fields of film and drama and for his commitment for social causes and the education of underprivileged masses in India. He has scripted over 200 films and has acted in 350 films. He is also the author of about 100 books on literature. He is presently preparing documentaries on pollution, yoga, diet, and arthritis.
Justice Sachar was also awarded with the prestigious "Pride of India Award" by AFMI for his Illustrious legal and Judicial career and the outstanding courage and compassion exhibited as the Chairman of the “Prime Minister’s High level Committee on Socio-Economic status of Muslims in India."
Kader Khan received an excellence award for his outstanding contributions, and great distinctions achieved as a Cine artist and for his life long commitment to the cause of Education of underprivileged groups."
Justice Sachar and Kader Khan were also recognized by the United States Congressmen Nick Lampson and Al Green respectively and presented with congressional citations.
Both Justice Sachar and Mr.Khan also spoke at several regional events of AFMI in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Toronto.
The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin, is a North American based grassroots organization, dedicated to socio-economic and educational development of Muslims and other underprivileged masses in India.
