In front of 40,983 spectators Saturday, Werder put Frankfurt under pressure right from the start and finally broke the deadlock after 35 minutes through Sanogo’s goal.

In the 79th minute, Petri Pasanen put the match beyond doubt when he scored with a brilliant free-kick from about 30 metres.

Although Frankfurt got one back in the 79th minute through Michael Thurk, it was too little too late.

Bremen’s win means they move up to fifth place in the Bundesliga table just behind Frankfurt who are level on points but have a better goal difference.

The win also sends a signal that Bremen has bid farewell to a poor start and is back on track.

During the opening stage of the new season, Bremen were held 2-2 at newly-elevated Bochum and a shameful 0-4 home defeat by Bayern Munich.

In other matches Saturday, a 76th goal from Federico gave Borussia Dortmund the three points from Hansa Rostock. It was its first away win of the season.

The home side is still without a point or a goal in the new season after it was promoted to the top league.

Newly-promoted MSV Duisburg also registered its first victory at home. Three goals in the span of seven crazy minutes from the home side crushed Arminia Bielefeld, who would have shot to the top of the league if they had won.

For Hannover 96, Vahid Hashemian’s goal clinched their first home win of the season, which also ended Bochum’s unbeaten run of the season.

The win means that Hannover move up the table into 11th place, while Bochum, despite Saturday’s defeat, leapfrog Bielefeld, who lost 3-0 Friday at Duisburg, and go second behind high-flying Bayern Munich.

For the rest two matches, Hertha Berlin SC defeated Wolfsburg 2-1 at home while FC Energie saw their first home tie of the season after a 1-1 draw against Nurnberg.

Sunday, so-far-unbeatable Bayern face Hamburger SV while Karlsruher SC take on VfB Stuttgart.
