New Delhi : Scores of protesters took to the streets Wednesday and damaged a few public vehicles after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) began demolishing illegal properties and encroachments in west Delhi.
The mob, numbering around 50, damaged a Delhi Transport Corp. (DTC) bus and two vehicles of Delhi Police in New Moti Nagar area, where the MCD staff had come to pull down illegal structures and properties.
The protesters also blocked vehicular movement for some time near the Karampura bus terminal, close to the demolition site.
“They should have issued us a notice or informed us before carrying out the sudden demolition drive,” said Ashok Sadana, who runs a grocery shop in the area.
Police have deployed extra personnel in the area and situation was said to be under control.
“We have provided extra police personnel and security to the MCD staff carrying out demolitions. All traffic obstructions have also been removed,” a senior police official said.
