Karunanidhi strangling democracy: Jayalalitha

Chennai : Tamil Nadu leader of opposition J. Jayalalitha Thursday accused Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of attempting to “intimidate” her and said he was “strangling” democracy in the state.

Jayalalitha was reacting to Karunanidhi’s comments a few days ago that she should “draw punishment under criminal law” for alleging that the government was ignoring reports from the Intelligence Bureau.

“Karunanidhi fears losing power and is afraid of the growing support” for AIADMK, she said.

“As leader of opposition, I have every right to think about the people and struggle for their welfare. Whether I am in power or out of it, I spend my time only for people’s issues,” Jayalalitha said in a statement.

“Karunanidhi is only busy doing good to his family members. People are waiting for a chance to throw his government out of power,” she claimed.

“We (AIADMK) abide by the law and do everything according to it. It is a threat to democracy to stop me from protesting for the welfare of people,” the former chief minister said.
