Ranchi : Artisans and weavers in Jharkhand have now got a platform to exhibit their products, with the opening of Jharcraft, an exclusive showroom for them.
Jharcraft, inaugurated here earlier this week, exhibits handlooms and handicraft items prepared by the state’s weavers and artisans.
The showroom, run by the Jharkhand Silk Textile and Handicrafts Development Corporation (JSTHDC) houses silk products, handicrafts of different varieties like bamboo, articles made from jute, besides potteries and statues.
“We are hopeful that the showroom will help handloom weavers and handicraft artists to exhibit and market their products,” said Dhirendra Kumar, director of the handloom, sericulture and handicraft department in Jharkhand.
JSTHDC will buy the handlooms and handicrafts from weavers and artisans and sell their products through the showroom.
Officials said more such showrooms could be opened in major cities of the state in future.
Weavers and artists are happy with the state government’s initiative. “We are happy that the state government has woken up to the plight of artisans in the state. Scores of artisans and weavers are leading a miserable life as they do not get genuine price for their products,” said Ram Ratan Manjhi, a handicraft artist.
