Car bomb kills 5 civilians in Baghdad’s Shiite bastion

Baghdad : A car bomb went off near a police station in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad on Saturday, killing at least five people and wounding 30 others, an Interior Ministry source said.

“An explosives-rigged car parked near the Naser police station in the Sadr City neighborhood detonated in the afternoon, killing at least five people and wounding some 30 others,” the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The toll could rise, the source said, as ambulances continued ferrying casualties to nearby hospitals.

Iraqi security forces rushed to the area and cordoned off the scene, he added.

The sprawling Shiite slum of Sadr City is a stronghold for Mahdi Army militia loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
