Rome : The Italian province of Ravenna has registered 197 cases of chikungunya fever, Europe’s first known cases of mosquito transmitted viral infection.
The European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) said at least 166 cases have
been confirmed and noted that an 83-year old man died with the symptoms. It
said it is be the first time any part of Europe registers viral infections
spread by mosquito bite
The disease, also known as “the man with a stoop”, because of the serious aches in the joints, is transmitted between human beings through the Aedes Aegypti and the Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes and was first identified in Tanzania in 1953.
ECDC warned that all persons travelling in the region must protect themselves from insect bite and alerted that those suffering from any of the symptoms must immediately call for medical intervention.
