Paris : The United States and Russia are holding their second round of negotiations on America’s plan to deploy an anti-missile shield in central Europe, diplomatic sources said Monday.
“The discussions between Russia and the US are already underway. The talks have just started,” a Russian foreign ministry official was quoted as saying.
In January, the US had announced its plans to construct military radar in the Czech Republic and deploy 10 interceptor missiles in Poland to protect it and its allies from missiles fired by what it termed as “rogue” states such as Iran.
Russia, which strongly opposes the project, terming it as a direct threat to its security, has called on the US to instead use a Russian-leased radar system already existent in Gabala, Azerbaijan.
The first round of negotiations between the two countries was held in Washington.
Experts from Azerbaijan, Russia and the United States are set to meet in the Azerbaijan capital Baku, to discuss the Russian proposal on Sep 15.
