The incident occurred at the Mallabhum Institute of Technology (MIT) at Bishnupur, around 130 km from here, late Monday night, the police said.

Sudipto Mondal, a second-year student of electronics and telecommunication, was assaulted by six of his classmates and pushed from the roof. Mondal was first taken to a private nursing home at Arambag, but later admitted to Bishnupur Sub-Divisional hospital.

Mondal’s family and college authorities lodged an FIR Tuesday with the police against the six students, who have been charged with attempt to murder.

All six students are absconding, the police said.

“It is not a case of ragging as the students fought with one another in the hostel premises. We have lodged a complaint with the police. If these six students are found guilty, we will definitely take action against them,” MIT chairman Dhurjati Banerjee told reporters Tuesday.

He said the parents of the accused have been informed over by telephone and the college has sent telegrams to their home addresses.

“MIT is a residential college and it’s not always possible to find out if students are fighting with each other in the dead of the night,” Banerjee said.

Last week, the Calcutta High Court directed MIT authorities to provide security to another student, Soumya Roy, who was assaulted by some senior engineering students in the college.

Soumya, a first-year student, was allegedly beaten up and forced by three senior students to take drugs inside the college campus in May.
