6.3-magnitude quake hits Sumatra

Jakarta : A magnitude 6.3 earthquake jolted Indonesia’s Sumatra island Thursday in a series of aftershocks following the 7.9-magnitude quake that hit the island Wednesday evening.

The tremor occurred at 10:40 a.m. (03.40 a.m. GMT) and was followed by a 5.5-magnitude quake within 20 minutes, according to the data form the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

The agency has recorded at least 31 aftershocks since the major quake at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday that shook three Sumatra provinces – Bengkulu, West Sumatra and Jambi – and resulted in four tsunami warnings.
