The developer, Meghdoot Adhikary, and his two aides, Sajal Bhattacharjee and Shankar Mistri in South 24-Paraganas district assaulted the mason Raghubir Vajpayee and finally electrocuted him Monday evening, reports said.

The trio reportedly dumped the body on the Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass and fled in their car. Local people who spotted the body informed the police about the incident Tuesday.

“According to the complaint, Raghubir was severely beaten up by three men and then electrocuted,” South 24-Parganas superintendent of police Praveen Kumar said. “The developer and his aides were arrested and the body recovered.”

Local residents said Raghubir’s ordeal started Monday evening when the developer accused him of stealing his cellphone. When Raghubir denied the charge, he was dragged inside a building under construction and beaten up.

“When a few local residents came to his rescue, the developer forced him to touch a high voltage electric line at the construction site,” a local resident, Hiralal Yadav, said. Raghubir died on the spot.

The suspects then tried to dispose off the body on EM Bypass, where they were spotted by the victim’s wife, Renu, but they lied to her, saying Raghubir suddenly fell unconscious and they were taking him to hospital.

Police said the trio later dumped the body, a few metres from the place where Raghubir had been living with his wife Renu. They had married just two months ago.

The construction work at the building has been stopped and a police picket posted in the area.
