He has suggested a vote of confidence along with a vote of no confidence to circumvent the dissolution of the house in the event of a prime minister losing the trust vote in parliament.

“I said this long ago when the no-confidence vote was brought against the V.P. Singh government (1990) and then again when it was brought against the H.D. Deve Gowda government (1997) that along with the no-confidence vote, a confidence vote for a leader who could possibly lead from that point should also be brought in,” the LJP chief told reporters Wednesday.

“Change of leader should take place in the house, whether it is Manmohan Singh or the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government, when there is a no-confidence motion then there should also be a confidence motion to decide who the house trusts.”

He, however, refused to blame Manmohan Singh for the Left’s objections against the India-US nuclear deal.

“It is not a question of Manmohan Singh alone. We are all alliance partners and we are all equally responsible. I am a minister and the entire cabinet is responsible for any decision of the government.

“How can I speak against the nuclear deal? I am part of this government,” he added.

But he said, “I understand the Left has genuine apprehensions and the UPA-Left committee is addressing these concerns.”
