Crunchy biscuits from Himachal apple waste

Experiments on making biscuits out of waste pulp are being carried at the Parmar horticulture university at Solan, about 50 km from here.

Scientists are drying the pulp waste after juice is extracted from the fruit. This is done at several juice plants in the state including three big plants run by the state Horticulture Produce Marketing Corporation (HPMC).

About 75 percent of the fruit is used in making the juice and the rest is treated as waste.

HPMC finds it difficult to discard this waste produced at its plants. It is now hoping to adopt this new technique and make biscuits and money out of it in the near future.

The process involves drying the pulp and adding mixtures through a particular technique to convert it to apple biscuits.
