Prime Minister to get honorary doctorate from alma mater

Chandigarh : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from his alma mater Panjab University here.

This was decided at a meeting of the university syndicate here Thursday.

The prime minister had studied at Panjab University for his master’s degree in economics.

He later joined the department of economics as a lecturer and rose to be a professor at a comparatively young age, in his early ’30s.

Originally settled in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar after India’s partition in 1947, Manmohan Singh did his graduation from a college there.

A special convocation is being planned by the Panjab university to honour the prime minister.

Manmohan Singh is being conferred the honorary doctorate in the diamond jubilee year of the university.
