The president will be accompanied by a high-ranking delegation.

Ahmadinejad will meet several head of state, as well as representatives of the Iranian diaspora in the US.

Following his two-day visit to New York, he will travel to Caracas in Venezuela to meet President Hugo Chavez, an outspoken critic of the US foreign policy.

The Iranian president’s visit to New York comes just days after US military authorities said they were being “forced into the military option” by Germany’s hesitation to apply additional sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme.

Iran, in turn, has vowed to teach the US “a painful lesson” in the event of any attack on it.
