Three lawyers were injured in the attack while several under-trial prisoners escaped from police custody, taking advantage of the situation.

“A group of armed criminals walked into the court premises and hurled bombs at Rai. He was killed on the spot,” the police said of the triple murder accused.

The attackers also fired shots before hurling bombs at Rai, an eyewitness said.

Hundreds of lawyers protested against the incident by shouting slogans against the district administration.
