Balasore (Orissa) : In a daring effort, four under-trial prisoners Thursday scaled an 18-foot boundary wall of the district jail and escaped, senior police officials said.

While one prisoner was caught by the people and handed over to police, three others we still missing, the police told IANS.

All four were Bangladeshi nationals identified as Mohammad Babu Khan, Arif Khan, Mohhamad Asadul Mulla and Zahid Khan, and were arrested in June for committing a series of robberies in and around Balasore, nearly 200 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

Confirming the prisoners’ escape, jailer Arun Rath said: “After fleeing from the jail, they entered the campus of Fakir Mohan College where students managed to nab Arif Khan. He was later handed over to police.”

“Arif has been admitted in the hospital as he sustained injuries while trying to escape. Three others – Babu, Asadul and Zahid – are absconding,” he added.

Dilip Das, inspector-in-charge of Balasore Town police station said: “We are raiding various parts of the town to nab the culprits.”
