The planes, named Sa’qeh (Thunderbolt), are the second generation fighter jets of Azarakhsh fighters of the Iranian air force.

The planes, claimed by the government to have been built by Iranian experts, will be officially inducted into the air force on the country’s Army Day on Sep 22 – which coincides with the start of its war with Iraq in 1980.

The test flight of the Sa’qeh comes a day after air force commander Mohammad Alavi warned Tehran would retaliate “with our warplanes” should the Israeli air force raid Iran.

French and US officials had said they were not ruling out war against Iran over the latter’s controversial nuclear power project which they claim was Tehran’s secret plan to weaponise.
