The service, launched by HFCL Infotel — which already offers fixed line and broadband services in the state — claims that mobile users will be charged only for exact usage in seconds and not for the entire minute.

“Ping is the most fun-packed bouquet for consumers, with low tariff, cost-effective handset and host of value-added services providing true value for money to the customer,” said HFCL Infotel CEO Surendra Lunia here.

“It is for the first time in the country that any mobile operator has offered a unique consumer-friendly pulse rate of one paise per second, and a SIM-based feature-rich colour mobile handset for as low as Rs.999,” Lunia claimed.

The new CDMA mobile service will be available in 150 towns and 5,000 villages across Punjab and Chandigarh. The service will be available through 8,000 retail outlets across the state.

“We have invested Rs.1 billion in the technology,” said HFCL Infotel chief operating officer G.D. Singh.

HFCL’s Connect brand, which entered the market here in 2000, already has over 250,000 landline, 70,000 mobile and 40,000 broadband users.

The company is targeting 300,000 new subscribers by March next year.
