Islamabad, Sep 21 (Xinhua) Pakistan Friday promoted Major General Nadeem Taj and named him as chief of the country’s premier spy agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), the military said.
“Major General Nadeem Taj has been promoted to Lieutenant General and posted as Director General Inter Services Intelligence,” a statement from the military’s publicity branch Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
General Taj has served as military secretary to President Pervez Musharraf, Director General of Military Intelligence, General Officer Commanding the corps at Lahore, and Director General of Military Academy, Kakul (North West Frontier Province).
He replaces ISI chief Lt. Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kiani.
Maj. Gen. Mohsin Kamal was promoted as Lt. Gen. and posted as Commander of the core based at Rawalpindi Corps, one of the most important corps in the country.
According to the army statement, Maj. Gen. Shujat Zamir Dar was promoted to the rank of Lt. Gen. and appointed Director General of Anti Narcotics Force.
Maj. Gen. Javed Zia and Maj. Gen. Jamil Haider were also promoted to the rank of Lt. Gen. and posted to General Headquarters Rawalpindi.
Maj. Gen. Muhammad Asghar was appointed as the Rector, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), which the army runs.
The top level promotions and appointments came a few days after President Pervez Musharraf’s lawyer told the Supreme Court that Musharraf would quit as army chief if he was re-elected president in elections due on Oct 6.
