Jammu : Major General R.K. Karwal has been appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 16 Corps based at Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir.
Gen. Karwal belongs to the Rajput Regiment and is presently posted as additional director general of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in Delhi. He has commanded a division in Southern Command and has also served as military attaché in Indian embassy in Pakistan.
He succeeds Lt. Gen. Tej K. Sapru who has been posted as General Officer Commanding in Chief (GOC in C) of thetern Command based at Chandimarh in Chandigarh.
Defence sources here said Sunday that Karwal will take over from Sapru in October-end.
16 Corps is one of the most prestigious corps in Northern Command. It has six divisions and takes care of operations in Jammu region that is south of Pir Panjal.
Besides looking after anti-militancy operations in sensitive districts like Doda, Udhampur, Reasi, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri and Poonch, it guards about 300 km of the 720-km Line of Control (LoC) which divides Kashmir with Pakistan.
There are two more corps, 14 and 15 Corps, in Northern Command. The 14 Corps is in Ladakh region and has two divisions while 15 Corps is in Kashmir Valley and has five divisions.
