Ranchi, Sep 25 (IANS) Celebrations after India’s win over Pakistan in the Twenty20 championship took an ugly communal turn in skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s hometown here after some people passed derogatory comments against Muslims.
Four youths passed comments against Pakistan and Muslims in Ranchi’s Kanke Road Monday night. Infuriated, a group of Muslims chased the youths into a house where family members were beaten up and three bikes and a scooter burnt.
“They first beat us, including my sister. And they burnt the bikes and set on fire my house,” said Rajeev Kumar Roy, owner of the house.
There has been tension in the area since and heavy security arrangements have been made to ward off further trouble, said a police official.
The revelry following India sensational win in the finals in South Africa also caused several accidents. At least eight young men were taken to Ranchi’s Sadar hospital with fractures and head injuries. Most of them were drunk, a doctor said.
As the jubilation continued into the night and Ranchi celebrated the victory of its boy Dhoni, the cricketer’s parents Tuesday offered prayers at the Deori temple, about 60 km from here.
