New Delhi : At least 500 women constables will be deployed at the Delhi University (DU) campus following molestation last week of two north-eastern girl students by some men appearing in a police entrance exam.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit made this assurance Wednesday to a delegation of DU students.
“The chief minister expressed her unhappiness at the present level of security in the campus and assured us that 500 women constables would be deployed in the campus,” said Aditya Raj Kaul, one of the three students who met Dikshit.
The women constables would be in addition to the regular police security.
“Madam (Dikshit) also said that an IAS level officer would henceforth coordinate the security apparatus of the university. The street lighting on the roads leading to the women’s hostels will be improved,” Kaul told IANS.
Kaul, Ekta Marwah and Ritwik Aggarwal met the chief minister at her office and handed over a petition underlining the need for proper security on the campus.
Last week, some men who appeared in a police recruitment test on the university campus sexually assaulted several girl students, triggering angry protests by students all across the city.
Two girl victims lodged the complaint with the police, which initially was not attended to.
“The fact remains that such cases continue to recur in DU with frightening regularity. But the administration still doesn’t wake up from its slumber and it hasn’t developed any mechanism to tackle it,” Kaul complained.
He said the chief minister had asked the Delhi chief secretary and vice- chancellor of DU to meet and decide on the future course of action.
