Dhaka : A political party in Bangladesh, launched during the emergency, wants the curbs on political activity to continue till ‘normalcy’ is restored.
The Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday said it favoured the state of emergency being prolonged to get “maximum benefits”.
PDP coordinator Ferdaus Ahmad Quaraishi told media that the declaration of emergency on Jan 11 by the interim government “saved the country from violent confrontations”.
Quaraishi also suggested that the general elections might be held under the state of emergency, reported the New Age.
The PDP’s formation despite curbs under emergency has been criticised by established political parties and civil society members, who view it as the caretaker government’s effort to ‘impose’ itself on the political scene.
Political activity has been banned since January, but indoor activity was allowed earlier this month. Elections had been called off amidst political turmoil in January.
