Police initially said Tirath had been shot at.

Tirath, who represents the capital’s Karol Bagh constituency, was sitting in the front seat of her car with her husband at the wheel when she heard the sound of the vehicle’s rear window smashing. The alleged attack took place at around 8.15 p.m. when they were in the Mandir Marg area of Jhandewalan in central Delhi.

Her personal security guard was sitting behind. The MP was going to Inderpuri in west Delhi to attend a religious function.

According to the MP, the assailants attacked the car from behind. She told police that a motorcycle had been following their vehicle for some time. When she heard the window smash she told her husband not to stop and they drove on for about one-and-a-half km before stopping and reporting the matter to the police.

A case has been registered at the Mandir Marg police station. A police team is examining the car and the spot where the attack took place.

“We are not sure whether she was attacked with a stone or was fired upon,” a senior officer said.

“We are taking details from the MP about the possible assailants,” he added.
