Kolkata : Mohun Bagan began their campaign in the second phase of the Kolkata Premier League (KPL) with a convincing 3-0 victory against George Telegraph here Wednesday.
Mohan Bagan notched the victory after a suicidal self-goal by George Telegraph defender Sanjoy Mallick in the eighth minute and a double strike by its own Brazilian striker Jose Barreto in the 57th and 80th minute of the game.
Barreto, with this double strike, took his tally to league high of nine goals.
George Telegraph, in reply to the green-and-maroon brigade’s attacking game, offered a lively challenge but failed to earn positive chances.
Mohan Bagan had the usual sharpness in its movement thanks to experienced midfielder S. Venkatesh and Barreto’s excellent feeding to their forwards Lalwmpuia and L. James Singh.
Mohan Bagan coach Carlos Silva’s experiment in fielding the old hand Imran Khan as goalkeeper also turned out fruitful as he made some brilliant saves.
The self-goal came off Anit Ghosh’s effort inside the box on a James Singh flag-kick.
Barreto’s accurate header off another James Singh flag-kick from the right brought the score to 2-0.
The Brazilian struck his second and team’s third goal through a solid right footer from a Lalawmpuia pass from the left flank.
