President, vice president greet PM as he turns 75

New Delhi : President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee were among those who wished Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his 75th birthday Wednesday.

Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), was one of the first to greet the prime minister, an aide in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said. “She called on the prime minister at his residence early this morning.”

Apart from senior Congress party leaders and cabinet colleagues, several chief ministers also greeted him, including West Bengal’s Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, whose Communist Party of India – Marxist now has a troubled relationship with the Manmohan Singh government over the India-US civil nuclear deal.

Manmohan Singh, India’s 14th prime minister, was born in a village in Punjab province in undivided India on Sep 26, 1932. The village is now in Pakistan.
