The report said the statement also reiterates adherence to implementation of all UN Security Council resolutions on Lebanon, particularly 1559, 1680 and 1701.

Members of the Security Council … “call for timely, free and fair presidential election in accordance with constitutional norms and away from any external interference,” said the draft statement.

It said members of the Security Council “encourage all efforts” in this regard, stressing the need for the cessation of violence and intimidation against Lebanese MPs and institutions.

The statement also reiterates backing to Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence and safety of its territories within its internationally recognized borders.

On Tuesday, Lebanese parliament decided to put off a session to elect a new president to Oct 23 because the required two-thirds quorum was not met.

The postponement had been expected after the Hezbollah-led opposition vowed to boycott a quorum in the absence of a consensus candidate.

Lebanese Lawmakers have to choose a candidate before Nov 24 to replace the incumbent President Emile Lahoud, who will step down on Nov 23 in line with the constitution.
