Chennai : Tamil Nadu’s Leader of Opposition and AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha Thursday said she was “not in a hurry” to join hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“It is true that we see eye to eye with the BJP in some matters. However, I have to make it clear that I do not belong to the Sangh Parivar. Our party has a long history of struggle and success. We are certainly not in a hurry to work out an alliance with any political party at this point in time,” Jayalalitha told Times Now in an interview.
About the speculation of a mid-term poll for the Lok Sabha along with polls for Tamil Nadu assembly, she said: “There is no certainty about elections – and at least I have not heard of the possibility at present. If the situation demands, we will discuss the matter of electoral adjustments at the appropriate time.”
But Jayalalitha was uncompromising on her stand on the state’s ruling DMK as well as its president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
“There cannot be two different rules for the chief minister and the common man. For his utterances on the Ram Sethu issue, Karunanidhi ought to have been booked under different sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code),” she said.
“He should resign on his own and the ministers belonging to his party should quit the union cabinet. If he doesn’t Karunanidhi’s minority regime ought to be dismissed for the reign of terror unleashed in the state,” Jayalalitha added.
She was referring to the chief minister’s comments on Hindu god Ram while defending the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project.
BJP and several Hindu outfits have opposed Karunanidhi’s comments, while AIADMK has approached the Madras High Court demanding a stay on the Oct 1 general strike called by the DMK regime in defence of the project. The court is spected to pass orders Friday.
“I have been the first to express opposition to the project. The efforts of the AIADMK have made people sit up and take notice in the Ram Sethu issue,” Jayalalitha said.
