PM postpones Chandigarh, Himachal visit

Chandigarh : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday postponed his visit to his alma mater, the Panjab University, here which was to confer him with an honorary doctorate to mark its diamond jubilee Oct 1.

No reason has been assigned by the Prime Minister’s office (PMO) for cancelling the visit.

The prime minister was also to go to Shimla Sep 30 to address a public rally. The state goes to assembly polls in February next year and the ruling Congress was looking forward to the visit.

Manmohan Singh was not only a student of this university but had also taught at the Department of Economics here. He became a professor while still in his early 30s.

Security personnel from the prime minister’s Special Protection Group (SPG) had already arrived to work out security arrangements.

Manmohan Singh was also expected to attend the birth centenary celebrations of martyr Bhagat Singh in Amritsar Friday but had opted out of it.
