Ranchi : The Jharkhand government’s art and culture department will soon start excavation work to trace the history of the state.
The focus of excavations will be on the Nagvanshi dynasty, which ruled over the Chhotanagpur region of the state in fourth century BC. Vikramaditya II, a ruler of the Gupta dynasty, married into the Nagvanshi dynasty of Jharkhand.
“The Nagvanshi rulers used to worship Shiva and as such a large number of relics of Shiva temples had been found in the state,” said A.K. Sharma, a former archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of India.
The art and culture department has organised a three-day workshop of archaeologists in Ranchi, which began Friday. The excavations will focus on megalith structures.
The department’s secretary R.S. Verma said: “No substantial work has been done in the past to trace the archaeological history of the state. The state government will fund the project to find out the historical facts.”
In the past, coins dating back to third and fourth century AD have been found in some parts of the state. Rock paintings of 10th and 11th century have also been found.
