The gunfire exchange began in the mosque in the south Kashmir village of Tujan in Pulwama, 45 km from here.

“We have lit up the area with electric generators to ensure the militants do not escape under the cover of darkness. We began firing after appeals to lay down arms were ignored by the two militants holed up inside the mosque,” a senior police official told IANS here.

The special operations group (SOG) and troops of 53 Rashtriya Rifles are involved in the operation.

“Maximum precaution is being taken to ensure that no damage occurs to the place of worship,” the official said.
