Bangalore : Karnataka’s ruling Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) Sunday bagged more than 1,300 of the 4,920 seats in civic body polls across the state but its partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was a distant third with over 900 seats.

JD-S won 1,314 seats, the Congress 1,284 and BJP 942, while the rest were taken by independent candidates, according to results for 4,084 seats that were out by 7 p.m.

A jubilant Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said his party’s performance showed it was no longer a rural-based party.

“Urban voters have favoured us for the first time and I am grateful to them,” he told reporters.

Kumaraswamy, who is to hand over chief ministership to the BJP on Oct 3 under an agreement reached 20 months back, said Sunday’s election results will not have any bearing on the power transfer.

The BJP too maintained the civic body polls would not impact the power transfer.

The Congress blamed what it called misuse of power and use of money by JD-S and BJP for its show in the elections held Friday.
