Kashmir mosque siege ends, two militants killed

Srinagar : Security forces Sunday afternoon shot dead two Hizb-ul Mujahideen militants hiding inside a village mosque in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, ending the siege that began a day ago.

The militants. hiding inside the mosque in Tujan village in Pulwama, 45 km from here, were gunned down by troops of the 53 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and special operations group (SOG) of the state police.

“The operation has ended. The mosque was partially damaged. The two holed up militants, belonging to Hizb-ul Mujahideen, were gunned down by the security forces this afternoon,” a senior police official told IANS.

“Security forces are still busy searching the area.”

Troops surrounded Tujan village Saturday afternoon on specific information about the presence of the guerrillas.

As the security forces started searching the village, the militants opened fire at them, provoking return fire. The two militants then entered the village mosque, which the forces immediately surrounded.
