Cairo : Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met here Sunday on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, the official MENA news agency reported.

According to MENA, Abbas briefed Mubarak his recent meetings with U.S. President George W. Bush and other senior international officials on the sidelines of the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The two leaders also tackled efforts to push forward the Mideast peace process and preparations for an upcoming U.S.-sponsored international conference on Mideast peace slated for November.

Upon his arrival in Cairo from the Portugal capital of Lisbon earlier in the day, Abbas held a meeting at the airport with Amr Moussa, Secretary General of the Cairo-based Arab League, on the latest developments in the Palestinian lands and the outcome of his meetings in New York.

On Friday at the UN General Assembly, Abbas said that the November Mideast conference offers “a new beginning” for serious negotiations leading to the end of the prolonged Israeli occupation and the realization of a two-state vision for Palestinians and Israelis.

On July 16, Bush proposed to hold an international conference to help resume the stalled Middle East peace talks, which would include Israel, the Palestinians and some neighboring Arab states.
